Ed Carpenter Racing’s Conor Daly in the No.20 U.S Air Force Chevrolet and his teammate Rinus Veekay in the No.21 Sonax Chevrolet are ready to tackle this weekend’s NTT IndyCar Series challenge, the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg following a strong season-opening Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park.
Daly goes into the race off the back of a 16th place finish at Barber and he is hoping to improve on this performance saying:
I have always loved St. Pete, it is such a great event! I was able to win in Indy Pro 2000 back in 2010, which was my first time racing on the INDYCAR stage. I led laps there in 2016 as an NTT INDYCAR SERIES rookie as well, so this race has always meant a lot to me. Love the track, love the city, love the event. We learned a lot last weekend and are ready to put on a show in the U.S. Air Force machine!
Rinus Veekay heads to St Pete off the back of an extremely strong race at Barber where he came from 14th on the grid to finish the race in sixth place despite being caught up in the violent fist lap crash at Turn 5 and of course nursing the broken finger he sustained during the Indianapolis Motor Speedway open oval test last week and looking ahead to St Pete the Dutchman says:
I am super excited for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg! Last weekend was very awesome, it was a crazy race but to finish 6th in the first race of the season is definitely not a bad start. I am aiming to keep this up and get some hardware, the team deserves it! I am already in St. Pete and the track looks awesome. I can’t wait to get going!
