Andretti Autosport driver Simona De Silvestro has admitted that she is likely to miss this years 100th edition of the Indianapolis 500 due to her existing commitments in Formula E.
The Swiss driver who joined Michael Andretti’s Formula E team last season after leaving the Sauber F1 Team has stated that right now her attention is on Formula E and not a return to the Verizon IndyCar Series. Speaking to MotorsportsTalk during Buenos Aires E-Prix she commented by saying:
I always tease Michael [Andretti] a little bit about it because he knows I’m really passionate about IndyCar and there’s still stuff that I wish I could race there and show what I can do still, But it’s just difficult and really depending on sponsorship. Right now, Formula E is really the focus and the opportunity is really good here. I have to prove myself here and that’s what I’ve got to do first.
Qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 clashes with the Berlin E-Prix and when asked about the chances of her racing at Indy this year, De Silvestro commented by saying –
I’d love to you know because it’s the 100th running also, It’s really special because I’ve raced there four times now and it’d be really cool to do it, but it might be difficult this year especially with the Berlin race. I would have to miss quite a lot of practice and also qualifying. I wouldn’t be able to be there, so it makes it a little bit trickier.
She continued by saying:
If Berlin wasn’t there, maybe it’d be more of a goal, but right now you never know. Berlin is the focus.
Andretti is likely to run a fourth car at the Indianapolis 500 but for now the team will run the three car full time programme.
