Reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet set the fastest time in the opening session at the Mid-Ohio sports car course in Lexington ahead of Sunday’s Honda 200.
Dixon set a fastest time of 01:04.4491s and ended the session just ahead of Will Power who last time out in Toronto with Juan Pablo Montoya in third place.
Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT DATA Chevrolet ended the session in fourth place just ahead of Helio Castroneves in the No.3 Hitachi Chevrolet. Castroneves set a fastest time of 01:04.7217s.
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe in the No.5 Arrow was the fastest Honda driver in the morning session setting a fastest time of 01:04.7559s.
Series points leader Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 PPG Automotive Refinish Chevrolet set the seventh fastest time just ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden while Sebastien Bourdais in the No.11 Team Hydroxycut Chevrolet ending the session in ninth place. Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL was the fastest Andretti Autosport Honda ending the session in 10th place with a time of 01:04.9059s.
Charlie Kimball who won here in 2013 ended the opening session in 11th place with a fastest time of 01:04.9208s with Marco Andretti in the No.27 Snapple Honda in 12th place.
Graham Rahal was 13th fastest in the No.15 Steak N’ Shake Honda with Carlos Munoz in 14th place just ahead of Conor Daly in the No.18 Jonathan Byrd’s Hospitality Honda who brought out a red flag towards the end of the session however the American felt that up until that point the car was working well.
Takuma Sato ended the session 16th place in the No.14 ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing Honda.
Mikhail Aleshin was 17th fastest in the No.7 SPM Racing Honda with Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot in the No.20 Fuzzy’s Vodka was 18th fastest just ahead of Jack Hawksworth and Max Chilton.
RC Enerson making his Verizon IndyCar Series race debut this weekend with Dale Coyne Racing ended the session in 21st place having completed 31 laps with a fastest time of 01:05.7501s while Alexander Rossi in the No.98 Castrol Edge/Curb Honda rounded out the order in 22nd place.
