Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon may not be in a position to win this year’s Verizon IndyCar Series title, however he is on target for a strong end to his season.
The New Zealander completely dominated IndyCar’s return to Watkins Glen at the weekend taking the Verizon P1 Award and securing his 40th series victory, his fourth at the Glen. Dixon has moved into third place in the series standings on 451 points with just the double points GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma remaining this season.
Penske have been extremely strong this season winning 9 of 15 races this season, one of their drivers will win the championship.
Dixon has taken two victories this season in Phoenix and Watkins Glen and two Verizon P1 Awards in Toronto and at the IndyCar Grand Prix at the Glen presented by Hitachi. Dixon has had four podium finishes this season including his wins.
Dixon heads to Sonoma equal on points with Helio Castroneves, 451 with Dixon ahead by virtue of the fact he has two wins this season.
Dixon’s performance in Watkins Glen shows that Ganassi were extremely quick at the weekend with all of the cars and it is something that he will be hoping continues in Sonoma in just under two weeks time.
Dixon will join his team mates and the rest of the Verizon IndyCar Series teams and drivers at Sonoma raceway on Thursday for a pre race test.
