Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the No.9 NTT DATA Honda ended the opening 45 minute practice session at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in first place with a fastest time of 01:07.6357s ending the session just ahead of Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves who was the fastest Chevrolet.
Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais set the pace earlier on in session and ended the morning in third place with a fastest time of 01:07.8187s ending up just ahead of Schmidt Peterson’s James Hinchcliffe while Will Power was fifth fastest in the No.12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.
Defending Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi was sixth fastest in the No.98 NAPA Auto Parts Honda for Andretti Autosport ending the morning just ahead of team mate Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda.
Tony Kanaan was seventh fastest in the No.10 NTT DATA Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing just ahead of defending series champion Simon Pagenaud in the No.1 Menards Chevrolet. Mikhail Aleshin rounded out the top ten in the No.7 SMP Racing Honda.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal in the No.15 PennGrade Honda ended the session in 11th place just ahead of Marco Andretti who improved to 12th at the end in the No.27 United Fiber & Data Honda.
Carlos Munoz was 13th fastest for AJ Foyt Racing just ahead of Josef Newgarden in the No.2 Hum Chevrolet for Team Penske.
Ed Jones ended the session in 15th place for Dale Coyne Racing just ahead of JR Hildebrand for Ed Carpenter Racing while Charlie Kimball was 17th just ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Takuma Sato.
Conor Daly was 18th fastest in the No.4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet ended the session just ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot while Max Chilton who suffered an electrical issue rounded out the order for Chip Ganassi Racing in the No.8 Gallagher Honda.
