The announcement this week that the Verizon IndyCar Series will return to the WhetherTech Raceway Laguna Seca next season for the 2019 finale received a wonderful reception from drivers, teams and fans a like.
The sport is returning to Laguna Seca for the first time since 2004. Some sections of the media in particular an unnamed journalist believes that the series should end the season on an oval and not a road course.
This particular journalist was extremely critical of IndyCar having their season finale at Laguna Seca and believes that the season finale at Gateway Motorsports Park would mean that teams could entertain sponsors in the local downtown St Louis whereas there is nothing like that at Laguna Seca.
However despite this journalist’s comments the series are extremely excited to be back at Laguna Seca for the season finale. Speaking about the news, Hulman and Company President Mark Miles commented by saying:
I can’t imagine a more attractive destination location for INDYCAR’s season finale. “Monterey is a place people want to be, and we will bring all of our guests. I think it’s a great choice for us.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team co-owner Bobby Rahal commented by saying:
It’s great news, but I might be biased. “I personally won four Indy car races there and won my first Can-Am race there. Our Indy car team won with Bryan Herta and Max Papis and our sports car team won IMSA races there, so I would almost bet you that Laguna Seca is the site of more victories for me as a driver and team owner combined of any track I’ve ever raced on.
