Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo has revealed that the Prancing Horse briefly considered trying to sign Sebastian Vettel for the 2009 season following the German’s dominant weekend in Monza in 2008 where he took pole and won for Toro Rosso.

Speaking to Sky Italia, di Montezemelo revealed that at the time although Vettel was extremely talented the team felt that he was too immature for the team so they decided to wait for Fernando Alonso.

Sebastian Vettel moved to Red Bull Racing in 2009 replacing David Coulthard as Mark Webber’s team mate at the Milton Keynes based outfit. Vettel and Red Bull went on to dominate Formula One from 2010 to 2013 winning four consecutive Drivers and Constructors Championships.

Ferrari eventually signed Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull at the end of the 2014 season with the German replacing Fernando Alonso who returned to McLaren as Jenson Button’s team mate for 2015.
