Verizon IndyCar Series points leader Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Hewlett Packard Chevrolet took his second P1 Award of the weekend and his fourth of the season as he edged out Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter Reay in Sunday’s qualifying session for race 2 of the Chevrolet Dual In Detroit on Belle Isle.
Speaking after taking the pole award Pagenaud said that his Penske crew made very little changes to the car from Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s race and that the changes they make before this afternoon will be weather related.
Pagenaud will be hoping that he can challenge for his first win since the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis last month. The Frenchman had a tough race at the Indianapolis 500 last weekend ending the race in 19th place while in race one here in Detroit on Saturday he finished the race in 13th place.
Penske head into the second race with a 1-2 in the Verizon IndyCar Series points standings as Helio Castroneves is in second place behind Simon Pagenaud with 254 points, seven ahead of reigning series champion Scott Dixon.
Pagenaud started the season opening Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg from pole despite the fact that his team mate Will Power secured the P1 Award as Power did not take part in the race. Pagenaud took pole at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis and in race 1 and 2 in at the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix this weekend which could prove to be crucial later in the season when it comes to the championship standings.
