The 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season is coming into its closing stages with the chequered flag on what has been a fantastic season just four races away. The final four races of the season are made up of two oval events which happen to be next up on the calendar and they are likely to play a key role in the outcome of the 2017 championship.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden heads into the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway with a seven point lead in the championship over his nearest rival and team mate Helio Castroneves with Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon eight points behind Newgarden.
The top five drivers in the championship, Newgarden, Castroneves, Dixon, Pagenaud and Will Power are separated by just 52 points.
Team Penske’s Will Power took at last year’s ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway while the series returns to Gateway Motorsports Park at the end of August for the first time since 2003, a race which saw Helio Castroneves take pole position for and go on to win the race.
This season, the last oval race which take place was the Iowa Corn 300 at the Iowa Speedway which was won by Helio Castroneves. The last three races of the season, in Iowa, Toronto and Mid-Ohio have been won by Team Penske drivers with Helio Castroneves and Josef Newgarden coming out on top.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon has taken won victory this season but has been extremely consistent which saw him lead the championship standing for a large part of the season so far however following two tough races in Toronto and at Mid-Ohio, the Iceman has fallen back in the championship to third place.
However Dixon is always one to watch out for on any track and ovals are no different. The Iceman took the Verizon P1 Award for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 in May.
