The Verizon IndyCar Series 2016 season comes to a close with the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
Firestone the official tire supplier to the Verizon IndyCar Series will bring 1,600 tires to the season finale. Firestone will provide each driver with eight sets of the Primary tire following consultation with the series as it is specified in the rule book that they would be allowed seven sets.
The Primary tire was specifically designed for this weekend’s GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. Firestone will provide each driver with three sets of the red walled Alternate tire which was also specifically designed for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
Each driver will be provided with five sets of the grey walled rain tire which has yet to be run in race conditions. Speaking ahead of this weekend’s race, Dale Harrigle commented by saying:
Sonoma Raceway provides an interesting challenge for the Verizon IndyCar Series drivers and their Firestone tires, as the course offers a unique configuration and a challenging track surface – one where sand and dirt are often present – which contributes to tire degradation. For this weekend’s race, we have slightly altered the primary and alternate tread compounds from those used in last years GoPro Grand Prix. The new treads will provide the necessary level of grip required for Sonoma Raceway. The construction of both the primary and alternate tire includes changes to the front tires which are designed to improve stability in the high speed corners and the carousal. These changes to front tire construction were first used at Mid-Ohio earlier this season.
