Firestone, the official tire supplier to the Verizon IndyCar Series have confirmed that they have brought nearly 1,600 tires to Watkins Glen this weekend.
The drivers in the series will each be provided with eight sets of the primary black walled tires for the race. The drivers will receive three sets of the red walled alternate tire, the same compound that used at the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, The Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio and the Road America.
The drivers have also been given five sets of the grey walled rain tire for the weekend and speaking ahead of the race, Dale Harrigle, Firestone’s Chief Engineer and manager of race tire development commented by saying:
The Firestone race tires for this weekend’s INDYCAR Grand Prix at the Glen was developed at our tire test on June 20th, the tire utilizes the same construction as the other Firestone road course tires, with a harder tread compound designed to withstand the fast speeds and high corner loading at Watkins Glen. The compound of this weekend’s primary tire is the hardest of any road course tire in 2016 given the on-track loads. The primary tires were used during the open test on August 11 at Watkins Glen, where the drivers and teams reported that the tire had good grip and durability over a stint. The alternate tire for this weekend is the primary used earlier this season at Road America.
