The Verizon IndyCar Series made a triumphant return to Gateway Motorsports Park for the inaugural Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Valvoline.
Officials at Gateway Motorsports Park said that there were between 35,000 – 40,000 spectators in attendance at the race on Saturday night. The entire weekend was a huge success for the series and for Gateway Motorsports Park.
There were fireworks both on and off track. As the green flag dropped in Illinois, fireworks went off to mark the start of the race however there were fireworks on track during the event with Penske team-mate’s, series points leader Josef Newgarden and reigning series champion Simon Pagenaud.
In the closing stages of the race, Pagenaud in the No.1 Menards Chevrolet was leading the race with Josef Newgarden in the No.2 PPG Automotive Refinish Chevrolet closing in on his team mate.
The pair made slight contact with Newgarden going on to win the race just ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon while Simon Pagenaud finished the race in third place.
Fans don’t have long to wait for the next chapter of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season with the IndyCar Grand Prix at The Glen takes place this weekend with track action getting underway on Friday.
