Former Formula One driver Esteban Gutierrez looks set to return to the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2018.
According to reports in the US on over the weekend, the Mexican is set to join Ed Carpenter Racing to drive the No.20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet alongside team owner Ed Carpenter.
It is believed that Gutierrez will drive in the road and street course events during the 2018 season starting with the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
Gutierrez made his Verizon IndyCar Series debut with Dale Coyne Racing earlier this season when he replaced the injured Sebastien Bourdais. The Mexican was extremely impressive during his time with the team and it is now expected that he will join Spencer Pigot at the team next season.
Pigot has joined Ed Carpenter Racing full-time for 2018 having replaced JR Hildebrand in the No.21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet.
If the reports prove to be true it would mean that there is just one full-time drive available for the 2018 season with Dale Coyne Racing looking for a replacement for Ed Jones who has replaced Tony Kanaan at Chip Ganassi Racing.
Paddock Eye understands that Conor Daly is close to a return to Dale Coyne Racing where he would team up with Sebastian Bourdais although nothing has been confirmed yet.
