Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has called on Formula One to provide greater security for teams at Grand Prix circuits after some of his crew were robbed at gunpoint while leaving the Interlagos circuit on Friday night.
Hamilton, who crashed out of qualifying in Q1 and will start Sunday’s race from the back took to Twitter to say:
Some of my team were held up at gun point last night leaving the circuit here in Brazil. Gun shots fired, gun held at ones head. This is so upsetting to hear. Please say a prayer for my guys who are here as professionals today even if shaken.
Hamilton went on to say:
This happens every single year here. F1 and the teams need to do more, there’s no excuse!
The Mercedes team confirmed that the incident did take place. A statement said:
Valuables were stolen but everybody is safe and uninjured which is the main thing.
