Reigning Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton ended the opening practice session at the Circuit of the Americas on Friday ahead of Sunday’s United States Grand Prix fastest, ending the morning just ahead of team mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton set a fastest time of 01:37.428s with Rosberg setting a fastest time of 01:37.743s. Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen ended the session in third place with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen in fourth. The Iceman set a fastest time of 01:39.407s ending the session just ahead of Sahara Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg who did a great job for the Silverstone based outfit setting a time of 01:39.712s.

Valtteri Bottas ended the session in sixth place for Williams Martini Racing just ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull.

Sebastian Vettel ended the session in eighth place in the second Ferrari with a fastest time of 01:39.988s ending up just ahead of Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz Jr who rounded out the top ten for the Italian team. Felipe Massa appearing in his final United States Grand Prix ended the session in 11th place just ahead of Sauber’s Felipe Nasr while McLaren Honda’s Fernando Alonso ended the session in 13th place.

The Haas F1 Team who are competing in their first home Grand Prix had a difficult morning with Esteban Gutierrez coming to a stop at the exit of the pit-lane due to a mechanical issue while Romain Grosjean came to a stop just behind his team mate as he was unable to engage first gear.

The Haas F1 Team pairing ended the session in 14th and 15th place respectively. Marcus Ericosson was 16th in the second Sauber.

Sahara Force India’s development driver Alfonso Celis driving in his first official Formula One practice session in 17th place and will hand the car back to Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez for the afternoon session.

McLaren Honda’s Jenson Button who is taking part in what is likely to be his last United States Grand Prix ended the session in 18th place just ahead of his former team mate Kevin Magnussen who was 19th for the Renault Sport F1 Team. Jordan King who made his debut with Manor Racing this morning in place of Pascal Wehrlein was very impressive ending the session ahead of Jolyon Palmer and his Manor team mate Esteban Ocon who rounded out the order in 22nd place.
