Three time Formula One world champion Sir Jackie Stewart believes Lewis Hamilton has no excuses for disobeying team orders and believes that his fellow three time champion should receive a meaningful punishment from the Mercedes F1 Team.
During last Sunday’s title showdown at the season finale Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Hamilton repeated ignored radio calls from his team to increase his race pace.
The three time world champion ended up backing his team mate and championship rival Nico Rosberg into the chasing Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen which meant that at the end of race the four drivers were separated by the narrowest of margins.
It is not the first time that Hamilton has ignored an order from the team and by Paddy Lowe coming on the radio, Mercedes motorsport boss, Toto Wolff said that Hamilton had escalated the situation. Wolff himself did not go on the radio as he confirmed following the race that he does not have the radio button on his console on the pit-lane or in the garage.
Stewart believes that for the money Hamilton gets paid each year by Mercedes, there are no excuses as to why he should disobey team orders and believes that the English driver could be released by the team if something like this happens again.
Stewart went on to say that Mercedes should give Hamilton the choice of it’s our way or you can leave the team.
