Arrow McLaren SP chief engineer Craig Hampson says he hopes that the team expand to a three car full time NTT IndyCar Series programme in 2021.
McLaren make their full time return to the series in two weeks time at the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg having entered into a partnership with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
The team have two new drivers in Patricio O’Ward and Oliver Askew and Hampson, who joined Arrow McLaren SP over the off season says that he would love to have someone like Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series legend Jimmie Johnson in a third car as that is what he was brought into the team to do to engineer a car.
Paddock Eye understands that Johnson who will end his NASCAR career this season is close to reaching a deal with Arrow McLaren SP to run select road and street course events in 2021.
Hampson will serve as Fernando Alonso’s chief engineer in the No.66 Rouff Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on May 24.
