Ed Carpenter Racing confirmed on Monday JR Hildebrand who drove for the team in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil will fill in for the injured Josef Newgarden starting with an existing test session taking place at Road America on Wednesday.

Newgarden fractured his right clavicle and right hand on Sunday following a crash with Dale Coyne Racing’s Conor Daly during the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Ed Carpenter Racing confirmed the news on Twitter saying:

He’s fast, so you know will work on a speedy recovery! will drive 21 until JN is ready.

The team went on to say:

. will climb in the #21 this coming Wednesday for a test we already had scheduled at .

Hildebrand took to Twitter to say:

So as I said, fully expect my dude to be back at it in no time, but will fill in with until then w/ RA test Weds.

The American went on to say:

Obviously not ideal circumstances, helps to know JN & team. Now we see how good of friends we are when I start calling to review his data.

Newgarden reported on Sunday night that he was ok but that he just needed time to recover from the injuries he sustained.
