Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe completed 46 laps on his return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the Canadian drove the circuit for the first time since the accident that forced him to sit out the majority of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

The Mayor of Hinchtown driving a plan liveried No.5 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway testing Honda’s new aero kit and Firestone’s Indianapolis 500 tyre range.

In the opening session, Hinchcliffe set a time of 42.0677s ending up in 14th place at a speed of 213.946mph while in the second session Hinch set the fifth fastest time with a 41.7899s at a speed of 215.363mph. Speaking following the day of testing, Hinchcliffe commented by saying:

Everyone was going to be thinking about it until we got out here and ran some laps, It’s always nice to be back at the Speedway; we all say that all the time and it’s extra nice to be able to go around at pace today. Sitting out last year was tough, Getting to watch all my friends and colleagues go do the greatest race on earth and have to be watching from the sidelines is a big blow, for sure. This is our Super Bowl, this is what we really put as much attention on as anything else. Of all the ones to miss, it’s the hardest. To get the opportunity now to come back, it definitely feels a little more rewarding.
