Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe has done it!!! The Canadian who 12 months ago was lying in a hospital bed following a near fatal crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has claimed pole position for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.

The Mayor of HinchTown was the fastest driver on Saturday in the Fast nine competition and will lead the field from pole ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden and Ryan Hunter Reay in the Andretti Autosport DHL Honda.

Townsend Bell in the No.29 Honda will start the race from fourth place just ahead of team mate Carlos Munoz and Verizon Team Penske’s Will Power.

Hinchcliffe’s team mate Mikhail Aleshin will start the race from seventh place alongside Helio Castroneves while series points leader Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet will start from ninth.
