Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe took a fantastic victory in the Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway on Sunday. The Mayor of HinchTown who started the race from 11th place ran up front all day and took his first victory since Long Beach last season.

Hinch came home just ahead of Spencer Pigot in the No.21 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet who took his first Verizon IndyCar Series podium finish for Ed Carpenter Racing.

It was a fantastic day for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato who recovered from contact with Ed Carpenter to finish the race on the podium in third place in the No.30 MiJack Panasonic Honda.

Defending series champion Josef Newgarden in the No.1 Hitachi Chevrolet dominated the race but in the end came home in fourth place just ahead of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Robert Wickens who looked on target for a podium until the dying stages of the race. Pole sitter Will Power in the No.12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet finished the race in sixth place just ahead of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal in the No.15 Luther Automotive Group Honda in seventh place.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Chevrolet ended the race in eighth place just ahead of Ed Carpenter in the No.20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet. Alexander Rossi in the No.27 NAPA Auto Parts Honda rounded out the top ten for Andretti Autosport.

Sebastien Bourdais finished the race in 11th place for Dale Coyne Racing Vasser Sullivan Racing. Series points leader Scott Dixon had a tough day at the office as he finished the race in 12th place just ahead of his team mate Ed Jones. Charlie Kimball in the No.23 Tresiba Chevrolet ended the day in 14th place for Carlin just ahead of his team mate Max Chilton.

Marco Andretti was 16th in the No.98 US Concrete Honda just ahead of Tony Kanaan and Zachary Claman DeMelo. There were four retirements in the race with Ryan Hunter Reay suffering a mechanical issue while Zach Veach also retired. Gabby Chaves retired on safety grounds as did Matheus Leist.

There were a record 955 on track passes in the race. NEXT up is the Honda Indy Toronto next weekend.
