The 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season officially got underway with the opening day of practice for the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
There were two 45 minute sessions on Friday where the Honda powered teams really came to the front with Andretti Autosport’s Marco Andretti in the No.27 hhgregg Honda topping the time sheets in the opening session giving Honda four of the top five fastest times.
In the afternoon session, it was Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the Honda powered No.9 GE LED Lighting machine who topped the times as once again Honda power came to the front with four cars in the top five.
Will Power was the fastest Chevrolet car with the Team Penske driver setting the second fastest time in the opening session while in the second session, reigning series champion Simon Pagenaud in the No.1 PPG Automotive Refinish was the fastest Chevrolet for Team Penske as he ended the session in fifth place.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the weekend goes but the results on Friday were positive and bode well for the rest of Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg. Practice gets underway at 10:50AM ET today.
