The Halo device may have saved Charles Leclerc’s live at the Belgian Grand Prix earlier this season when Fernando Alonso went over the top of the soon to be Ferrari driver however on Sunday in Abu Dhabi at the season finale the device was more of a hindrance then help.

During Sunday’s race, the Renault Sport F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg was involved in an incident in the early stages of the event with the Haas F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean which resulted in Hulk’s car flipping upside down and trapping the German inside the car while there were flames coming out the back of his damaged car.

Hulkenberg was trapped in the car for around three minutes as the marshals righted the car so that the German could extricate himself from the cock-pit.

If Nico had been injured it could have been a very different situation, thankfully the German walked away unhurt but the incident certainly raises questions about the safety of the device.
