Hyundai Motorsports were celebrating on Sunday in Monza after the team secured their second consecutive FIA World Rally Manufacturers championship following a double podium in the season ending ACI Rally Monza where Ott Tanak and Dani Sordo finished the event in second and third overall.
The team won three events in 2020 during what was a shortened season due to COVID 19 with Thierry Neuville winning the season opening Rally Monte Carlo, Ott Tanak took victory in Rally Estonia while Dani Sordo won in Rally Italy.
Speaking following the end of the season Executive Vice President and head of the Product Division at Hyundai Motor Group, Mr. Thomas Schemera said:
“The performance and attitude of Hyundai Motorsport in this most challenging of seasons has perfectly embodied the character of Hyundai and our N brand. You don’t win a title by luck; it is earned through tenacity, ambition, determination and sheer hard work with a human touch. Congratulations to the team for showcasing and upholding Hyundai’s principles and values in such difficult circumstances. We have already seen the positive effect that our WRC activities have on the Hyundai brand with the all-new i20 N set to bring the thrill of rally driving to customers around the world.”
Vice President and head of N Brand Management Motorsport Sub-division at Hyundai Motor Company, Mr. Till Wartenberg said:
“Motorsport is the ideal place to showcase and realise the potential of Hyundai cars to our customers. The achievements of Hyundai Motorsport in WRC represent the essence of our N brand, putting precision, performance and emotion at the core. This year has not solely been a challenge for the team to overcome the opposition, they have also had to challenge themselves in all areas to be crowned champions again. A truly N-spiring performance.”
Ott Tanak commented saying:
“I certainly won’t forget my first season as a Hyundai Motorsport driver. We had some high points, like my first win for the team in Estonia, but unfortunately, we had a few bad moments too. Still, I am pleased to be a part of this team and to share in this manufacturers’ title. I was impressed by how everyone responded to the very difficult challenge of the pandemic, and this is the result of that hard work and determination.”
Thierry Neuville commented saying:
It might not have been the season we had planned, but I am delighted for everyone in the team that we can celebrate a second manufacturers’ title together. My personal highlight of the season was pre-pandemic with our win in Monte-Carlo, a really special result that got the year off to just the right start. The situation changed quickly after that, of course, but I admire the approach of the team to dig deep and never give up. It’s exactly the attitude that makes WRC champions.”
Dani Sordo was very happy with how his season went saying:
“Personally, I am very happy for all of us at Hyundai Motorsport on this achievement. It’s been a tough year, and this is the sort of positive lift that we all need heading into the winter. Winning again in Sardinia was fantastic and we didn’t realise just how decisive that result would be for the championship; I’ve been with this team for many years and it’s my pleasure to play a part in this title.”
Craig Breen joined the team on a partial schedule in 2020 and was happy with how his campaign went saying:
“Everyone at Hyundai Motorsport thoroughly deserves this result. I have had the privilege to represent the team in two events this year, and I’d like to think our performance in Estonia contributed in a small way to this title. It’s been a huge team effort, though, and that is to be commended in a year like this one. We’ve all pulled in the same direction even when things looked impossible.”
Sebastian Loeb commented saying:
“Congratulations to my friends at Hyundai Motorsport for this title. It has been a joy to have been part of the journey for the past two seasons. The podium in Turkey was a great memory for me to take away personally but to win a manufacturers’ title again is a joint result; everyone has played an important role. I am sure there is even more to come for this team in the future.”
