McLaren Honda Andretti driver Fernando Alonso will make his Verizon IndyCar Series on Sunday as he competes in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The double Formula One champion is taking part in the race in the No.29 Honda in partnership with McLaren and Andretti Autosport.
Alonso will start the race from the second row of the grid in fifth place and was the fastest rookie in field, just behind his two of his Andretti Autosport team mate’s Alexander Rossi in the No.98 NAPA Auto Parts Honda and Takuma Sato in the No.26 Rouff Home Mortgages Honda.
Speaking ahead of the race, Alonso stated:
I want to make something clear. I’m not here to spend a week off or just have fun. I’m a racecar driver, I come to run. Above all, I hope this is an experience that can carry me the rest of my life. I hope the feelings I have and the things I see in my mind forever. And I hope that at the end of those 500 miles has learned something I didn’t know before
