It’s official!! For the first time in its 100 year history this weekend’s Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is SOLD OUT.
The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil takes place on Sunday and announcing that the race will be a sell out, CEO of Hulman & Company, the parent company of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Verizon IndyCar Series Mark Miles commented by saying:
There’s no event in the world like the Indy 500, This sellout is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the thrilling racing of the Verizon IndyCar Series and the bright future for both.
President of Indianapolis Motor Speedway J Douglas Boles commented by saying:
The Indy 500 is a uniquely Hoosier event, The community support for the this race has fueled excitement for the 100th Running and paves the way for the next century for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500.
To coincide with the news that the race is sold out it was also announced that for only the third time in the races history and for the first time since 1950, residents of Indiana who are not attending the race will be able to watch the race LIVE on ABC. Boyles commented by saying:
With no way to accommodate more fans at IMS, we are delighted to be able to suspend the television delay in Indianapolis, making it possible for those cannot be with us on Race Day to watch the 100th Running live. The traditional delayed coverage on WRTV will continue, so race fans who attend the race will be able to go home with their families and watch the broadcast Sunday evening.
Traditionally the Indianapolis Motor Speedway never releases attendance figures for the race but it is the largest single day sporting event on the planet.
