The Month of May is completely different in 2020 due to the COVID 19 global pandemic. At this point in the season we would have just had qualifying for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge however this year the world has been in lockdown as countries have been devasted by the impact of COVID 19.
The world is slowly beginning a ‘new normal life’ of social distancing and staying safe. More and more people of working from home with other major changes such as less air travel.
The 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge was due to take place on Sunday, however due to COVID 19 that is not the case and the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series season which was due to get underway on March 15 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg will now get underway behind closed doors with social distancing in place on Saturday June 6 at Texas Motor Speedway with the Genesys 300.
The 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge has been rescheduled for Sunday August 23.
The NTT IndyCar Series and NBC Sport came together recently and decided to show the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday May 24 with extra special content from defending Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenaud and runner up Alexander Rossi chatting at social distance with Mike Tirico who presented the Indy 500 coverage last year.
Pagenaud in his No.22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet and Rossi in his No.27 NAPA Auto Parts Andretti Autosport Honda took to the Speedway which will give fans a first taste of what the new aeroscreen will like when at high speed.
There will also be other surprises and performances in store during the coverage.
NTT IndyCar Series fans in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland wil get the opportunity to watch the race as Sky Sports F1HD will simulcast the show with NBC Sport from 7.30PM.
The 2020 NTT IndyCar Series season gets underway behind closed doors without fans with the Genesys 300 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday June 6.
