The final race of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season takes place in California next weekend with the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
It has been an extremely dramatic season and it is set to be an extremely intense off season for the teams and drivers up and down pit-road. Here’s what we know for certain. 2015 series champion Scott Dixon stays at Chip Ganassi Racing, Helio Castroneves, Will Power and Simon Pagenaud will all stay at Penske in 2017.
Ed Carpenter will more than likely continue to run ovals only next season. Graham Rahal will remain with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing while James Hinchcliffe stays at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, beyond that it is anyone’s guess as to what might happen.
The 2017 picture should become an awful lot clearer in the coming weeks with deals expected to be done by the end of September with the winter testing window opening on October 3 teams will be hoping to have firm plans in place as to not disturb their preparation for the 2017 season.
The Verizon IndyCar Series is unlikely to field additional teams next season but there will certainly be new faces in many of the cockpits with a number of talented drivers from the Indy Lights series stepping up to full time IndyCar rides in 2017.
