Qualifying for the Hy-ee Doubleheader INDYCAR SERIES weekend gets underway in less than an hour and with that in mind, here at Paddock Eye we thought we would talk you through how the qualifying format works.
There are 28 cats in the field this weekend and each driver will have two warm up laps with the opening fast lap giving you the grid slot for race 1 while for race 2 your second lap will determine your grid slot.
The order in which the drivers go out in is based on the championship order meaning that Ed Carpenter who is running ovals only this season goes out first while championship leader Alex Palou in the No.10 The American Legion Honda will be the last one on track.
Qualifying gets underway at 9:30AM meaning that track conditions will likely be very cool so sub-optimal for the opening few drivers put once rubber is laid down it will make conditions a lot better.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden in the No.2 Hitachi Chevrolet will be hoping that he can continue his strong start to the weekend having led the way in practice on Friday and speaking following th action he said:
“As you can see, we’ve got a pretty good package.. “We ran a good couple of first laps, and it was just OK in race trim. I think we need to be a little bit better. This place is tricky. I feel like everyone is going to be really good this weekend. No one stands still here in the INDYCAR SERIES.”
