Arrow McLaren SP’s Kevin Magnussen says that it is great to be back with the McLaren brand as he prepares to make his NTT IndyCar Series debut with the Indianapolis-based outfit in place of the injured Felix Rosenqvist who suffered a huge crash during Saturday’s Detroit race one last weekend.
Magnussen, who made his Formula One debut alongside Jenson Button with McLaren in 2014 and scored a podium finish on his debut in Australia where he finished the Australian Grand Prix in second place was due to compete in the NTT IndyCar Series in 2015 with Andretti Autosport however McLaren blocked the move.
Magnussen had been part of the McLaren Young Driver Programme and speaking about his return to the McLaren family this weekend at Road America, Magnussen told a media conference call on Friday:
I mean, it’s great to be back with the McLaren brand. It’s been home for me for many years. Quite long ago now, it was 2014, but I spent my whole kind of junior career being a young driver for McLaren in their F1 program and I have a lot of good memories of that. They gave me my first Formula 1 race and season, my podium in F1, my first race and lots of good memories in that regards. So nice to be back with that brand.
Magnussen goes into this weekend’s race having taken victory in the Detroit IMSA race last weekend with Chip Ganassi Racing.
