It’s finally here! We can say it. It’s INDYCAR race day! The opening race of the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg, presented by RP Funding, goes to the green flag at 12.30 ET.

Following a thrilling qualifying on Saturday, two-time INDYCAR SERIES champion and defending Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden took his third career P1 Award on the Streets of St Pete.

Here at Paddock Eye, we will examine the storylines to watch during this 100-lap race.

  • Expect Josef Newgarden and Team Penske to be strong all race long, and don’t be surprised if he ends up in victory lane
  • Meyer Shank Racing’s performance is not just a flash in the pan. The team is extremely competitive, and Felix Rosenqvist will be fast in the race.
  • Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Alex Palou will move to the front following a tricky qualifying session.
  • AJ Foyt Racing will be looking for a top-ten finish following Santino Ferrucci’s great qualifying.
  • Who will be the leading rookie driver come the end of the race?
  • Don’t count out Colton Herta or Marcus Ericsson of Andretti Global for the win, starting fourth and sixth, respectively.
  • What can Callum Ilott do for Arrow McLaren from 16th on the grid?
  • How will Romain Grosjean of Juncos Hollinger Racing perform in race conditions?
  • What strategies will teams employ?

All of these questions and more will be answered over the course of the 100-lap Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
