Alan Jones, the 1980 Formula One world champion believes that Kimi Raikkonen was a little bit lucky to retain his seat alongside Sebastian Vettel for the 2016 season which kicks off this weekend in Melbourne’s Albert Park.
Raikkonen is into his third year with the team having returned at the start of the 2014 season. The Finn remains Ferrari’s most recent world champion having taking victory in 2007, his first year with the team.
Speaking on the eve of the race, Jones stated:
I think Kimi’s a little bit lucky to be there, But Ferrari has done the right thing, the person you know is better than the person you don’t know, and they’ve obviously got plans about what they’re going to do next year, which I hope is going to be Daniel Ricciardo.
Williams Valtteri Bottas had been linked with Raikkonen’s seat for 2016 with the Prancing Horse opting to retain the Iceman alongside Sebastian Vettel.
Speaking to the official Australian Grand Prix podcast Jones said that he was happy to see a manufacturer return as a team to Formula One as Renault took over Lotus during the winter and the Australian is hopeful that they will increase their development this year.
