Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood in the No.27 Siemens Honda was fastest in the opening practice at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix on Friday setting a 01:01.750s.

Scott McLaughlin in the No.3 TireRack Team Penske Chevrolet was second fastest just ahead of Will Power in the No.12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet who was third fastest despite an incident with Kyle Kirkwood during the session. Power set a fastest time of 01:02.384s just ahead of Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden.

Christian Lundgaard was fifth fastest with a time of 01:02.6047s while Colton Herta was sixth fastest just ahead of Pato O’Ward and Louis Foster who had a solid session for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Rinus VeeKay was ninth just ahead of Graham Rahal while AJ Foyt Racing’s David Malukas was 11th with a time of 01:02.8105s while Marcus Ericsson ended the day in 12th place. Christian Rasmussen was 13th just ahead of Meyer Shank Racing Marcus Armstrong while Indianapolis 500 winner Alex Palou was 15th just ahead of Felix Rosenqvist and Callum Ilott while Scott Dixon was 18th.

Robert Schwartzman was 19th just ahead of Kyffin Simpson while Alexander Rossi was 21st for Ed Carpenter Racing. Devlin DeFrancesco was 22nd just ahead of Sting Ray Robb and AJ Foyt Racing’s Satino Ferrucci.

Jacob Abel was 25th just ahead of Nolan Siegel and Conor Daly who rounded out the order in 27th.
