Graham Rahal took a fantastic win in the opening race of the Belle Isle Grand Prix as he led 55 laps of the 70 lap race to take victory in the first race of the double header.
Rahal emulated his dad’s victory with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing co-owner Bobby Rahal who won here in 1992. Speaking following the race, Bobby Rahal said that he was extremely proud of his son taking his first win of the season.
Rahal in the No.15 United Rentals Turns For Troops Honda started the race from pole position having been awarded the Verizon P1 Award after Helio Castroneves had his fastest time deleted in the session. Rahal led an all Honda 1,2,3 with Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon finishing in second and James Hinchcliffe finishing the race in third place for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
It was Rahal’s first win since the rain delayed Texas race at the Texas Motor Speedway last year.
Following his win, Rahal has moved up four places in the Verizon IndyCar Series points standings to 11th place 197 points. Rahal will be hoping he can have a repeat performance on Sunday.
