McLaren Executive Director Zak Brown has revealed that initial talk of Fernando Alonso competing in the Indianapolis 500 was a joke but got serious over the Australian Grand Prix just over two weeks ago.

Brown revealed that he discussed the idea with Alonso and McLaren Racing Director Eric Boullier over the course of the Australian Grand Prix weekend.

Following various meetings over the Chinese Grand Prix last weekend Alonso made the decision to do it with McLaren getting help from Andretti Autosport and officials at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as well as support from the Verizon IndyCar Series.
