Head of Mercedes Benz motorsport Toto Wolff has confirmed that the team have three options when it comes to replacing Nico Rosberg.
The option for the team is go after a top driver like Sebastian Vettel or Fernando Alonso however Wolff is unsure whether Vettel would be interested in joining the Brackley based outfit and is not willing to interfere with Ferrari’s internal matters.
The team could change how the dynamic of the organisation works by having a clear number 1 driver with their second drive able to guarantee points for the championship.
The third option is to promote from within like what Red Bull and McLaren have done with Max Verstappen and Stoffel Vandoorne. Mercedes have Esteban Ocon and Pascal Wehrlein under contract in their junior programme.
Ocon is not available however as he has joined Force India replacing Nico Hulkenberg who heads to Renault for next season.
Wolff also wondered what Williams would do without Valtteri Bottas so he believes that the option of going after a top driver is unlikely. Felipe Nasr could be available however it is unlikely as the Brazilian lost his key sponsor, Banco de Brasil.
We will just have to watch this space with interest.
