NBC Sports announced on Friday that veteran broadcaster Mike Tirico will host the company’s inaugural coverage of the Indianapolis 500. The announcement comes just 100 days from the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge which takes place on May 26 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
It is the first time that the Indianapolis 500 has been broadcast on NBC after 54 years with ABC. Speaking about the news, president of Production with NBC Sports and NBCSN Sam Flood said:
There’s no better way to come on the air for the biggest spectator event in the world than with Mike Tirico, the best big-event host in sports television. “Mike’s role will be to set the scene for the millions of viewers watching at home, not only touching on the drivers and the racing, but also on the enormous crowd and countless happenings around the speedway that make this a bucket-list event for all sports fans.
Speaking about the news, Tirico commented by saying:
I am thrilled to join our team in covering one of America’s iconic sporting events. “Having long enjoyed the Greatest Spectacle in Racing as a viewer, it will be fabulous to see it in person for the first time.
