Two time Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya could be in line to compete in a second Verizon IndyCar Series race with Team Penske in 2017.
The Colombian has been replaced at Team Penske this season by Josef Newgarden who joins from Ed Carpenter Racing.
Montoya has however agreed to compete in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil in a fifth Penske entry.
Paddock Eye understands however that the one race deal could be extended to two with Montoya likely to run the IndyCar Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 13.
When asked by the official IndyCar Series app about the prospect of Montoya doing a second race Team Penske president Tim Cindric commented by saying:
I would be surprised if we do anything before May. If we do anything, it would be, ‘Do we do the road course race at Indianapolis or not?’ But I don’t think we will do another race before May.
The 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season gets underway from March 10-12 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
