Juan Pablo Montoya’s return to the NTT IndyCar Series field for the first time since 2017 is great news for the sport. It was announced on Wednesday that the Colombian, two time Indianapolis 500 winner Montoya will join Arrow McLaren SP for the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on May 30 2021.
Montoya who last competed in the Indianapolis 500 in 2017 won the race as a rookie in the year 2000 with Chip Ganassi Racing and again in 2015 with Team Penske.
Montoya is a great asset and ambassador to the NTT IndyCar Series, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 and speaking about the news, the Colombian said he is excited to be returning to the McLaren family having raced for the team in Formula One in 2005 and 2006.
Since his last Indianapolis 500 in 2017, Montoya has competed in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and the 24 Hours of LeMans.
Montoya isn’t the only driver returning to the NTT IndyCar Series in 2021 as his former Team Penske team mate Helio Castroneves will return to the series with Meyer Shank Racing in a second car alongside Jack Harvey for select races in 2021 including the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on May 30 while Tony Kanaan returns to Chip Ganassi Racing for the oval races in the No.48 Carvana Honda sharing the car with seven time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.
It is unclear whether Montoya will compete in other races ahead of the Indianapolis 500 as he has driven an IndyCar with the new aeroscreen fitted.
