The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series announced on Thursday afternoon due to the ongoing global COVID 19 pandemic they have taken the decision to postpone the introduction of their Next Gen car until 2022.
The new car was due to make its race debut in 2021. In a statement, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Innovation John Probst commented saying:
Due to challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic, the debut of the Next Gen car will be delayed until 2022. The decision was made in collaboration with the OEMs and team owners. We will continue to develop the Next Gen car, and a revised testing timeline will be shared when more information is available.
