W Series returns to racing activity this weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Austria as the sport begins its new relationship with the FIA Formula One world championship serving as the support category for the sport at several races this season. The W Series which was launched in 2019 is unique in that not only are the drivers all-female and race in identical cars but they do not need to bring sponsorship with them in order to race so it is purely based on the talent of each driver.
The series returns after a year-long break due to the COVID 19 global pandemic and this year the sport not only has new drivers but they also have a brand new calendar with new venues. The series schedule for 2021 is as follows:
Round 1 – Red Bull Ring – Friday 25th and Saturday 26th June
Round 2 – Red Bull Ring – Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd July
Round 3 – Silverstone – Friday 16th and Saturday 17th July
Round 4 – Hungary – Fridday 30th and Saturday 31st July
Roun 5 – Spa Francorchamps – Friday 27th and Saturday 28th August
Round 6 – Zandvoort – Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th September
Round 7 – Circuit Of The Americas – Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd October
Round 8 – Mexico City – Friday 29th and Saturday 30th October.
The majority of the drivers who competed in the inaugural season of the W Series in 2019 return this season while there are a number of new drivers competing this year including Spain’s Nerea Marti, Brazil’s Bruna Tomaselli, Spain’s Belen Garcia and, Dane Ayla Agren who has served as an NTT IndyCar Series spotter.
It is going to be a very interesting season, the races will be live on Channel 4 in Ireland and UK.
