Carlin Racing’s Charlie Kimball will have a new race engineer in his ear as the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season gets underway at the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
Former Verizon IndyCar Series driver and former IndyCar radio network analyst Davey Hamilton calling the shots for Kimball from next weekend’s race onward. Kimball joins the new Carlin Racing team alongside Max Chilton who also joins the team from Chip Ganassi Racing.
Speaking during the final pre-season test at Sebring International Raceway, Kimball commented by saying:
I don’t know that it’s much different than calling a race on a broadcast,” “We’re working on the communication. We did a couple of long runs yesterday and felt good about how it sounded on the radio. So far, so good.
Kimball is looking forward to having the experience of Hamilton during the 2018 season which could prove to be extremely valuable as the series begins a new era with the universal aero kit.
The biggest thing Davey adds is his experience. “From Indy cars to dirt cars to super modifieds, he’s done it all. His experience on short ovals is an area that I have a lot of room to improve. To be able to pick his brain is invaluable.
