Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden in the No.21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet heads to the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach following a great race last time out at the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix where he finished the race in sixth place just behind Graham Rahal.
Newgarden has a great record in Long Beach, he started the race from the front row in 2012 in what was only his third Verizon IndyCar Series start.
In 2014, ECR took victory in Long Beach with Mike Conway. Newgarden had been leading the race when Ryan Hunter Reay attempted to overtake for the lead, however he didn’t make it and caused a collision involving seven cars including Newgarden, Conway was able to avoid the carnage and took the win.
At the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach last year, Newgarden secured his best finish here with seventh place. Following a strong run in Phoenix he is aiming a little higher this weekend, saying:
I can’t wait to get to Long Beach! It’s one of the most exciting events of the year. As a street course, it’s very thrilling and it has an amazing atmosphere. It’s definitely one of the tracks I feel like we’ve always been fast at, just not quite able to seal the deal from a results standpoint. The last couple of years we’ve been close, fighting within the top five but not able to get to the podium. Hopefully we can turn that around this year with the Fuzzy’s car and get on to the podium or even to victory lane!
