Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden says he believes is still in with a chance of winning the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship following his second victory of the season last weekend in Toronto.
Newgarden in the No.2 DevilBiss Chevrolet started the race from seventh place and made his way through the field to take his second win in Toronto.
Following his Toronto win, Newgarden is in fourth place in the championship just 23 points behind leader Scott Dixon with just five races remaining in the 2017 season.
Team Penske have been extremely impressive this season with their drivers in second, third, fourth and fifth in the championship.
Newgarden has two wins this season, the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama and last out in Toronto. Newgarden is just 20 points behind his team mate Helio Castroneves who is in second place in the championship.
Speaking following Sunday’s race, Newgarden stated:
“That is twice I have had good calls and got into the pits at the right time. “Thank you to the guys and thank you to Tim (Cindric, race strategist) for making that call. We got it right, but it was all about managing the race after that.
“I thought we had a very fast car, we got a pretty good start and stayed out of the mayhem. Very, very happy for all of Team Penske, and this DeVilbiss Chevy was pretty bright, but it was pretty fast, too.
Next stop for the Verizon IndyCar Series is the Honda Indy at Mid-Ohio.
