Defending Indianapolis 500 champion Josef Newgarden led the morning session as the opening day of practice got underway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday.
Arrow McLaren’s Kyle Larson was second fastest with a speed of 226.384MPH.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the No.9 PNC Bank Honda was third just ahead of Alex Palou and Scott McLaughlin.
Santino Ferrucci had a great session for AJ Foyt Racing in sixth just ahead of Rinus VeeKay and Marcus Armstrong. Linus Lundqvist was ninth while Felix Rosenqvist rounded out the top ten for Meyer Shank Racing.
Will Power was 11th just ahead of Pato O’Ward and Graham Rahal.
Marcus Ericsson was 14th for Andretti Global just ahead of Kyle Kirkwood and Tom Blomqvist.
Conor Daly was 17th in the No.24 Polkadot Chevrolet for Dreyer and Reinbold Racing with Cusick Motorsports.
Takuma Sato was 18th for Rahal just ahead of Ed Carpenter and Helio Castroneves.
Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Romain Grosjean was 21st just ahead of Callum Ilott and Colton Herta.
Christian Lundgaard was 24th just ahead of Sting Ray Robb and Alexander Rossi.
Agustin Canapino and Ryan Hunter Reay rounded out the times in 27th and 28th respectively.
Kyffin Simpson, Nolan Siegel, Katherine Legge, Christian Rasmussen, Marco Andretti and Pietro Fittipaldi did not set times this morning.
