Josef Newgarden in the No.2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet was fastest on the opening day of track action for today’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500.

The practice session was delayed due to thunderstorms and speaking following the action he said:

Most of the day was looking like we weren’t going to get out here, so just the fact we got a session, we certainly had a lot of time to try to achieve a lot. “I think we got there a little bit with the PPG car. I wasn’t super pleased, to be quite honest. I think we have some work to do.

“But that’s to be expected. You run practice, you try to figure out the weak points, and I think we have a couple that we need to work on. But we have a direction now, which is really good. I think our car can be really quick.

Qualifying for the race will take place at 11AM today after it was delayed on Saturday.

Newgarden’s teammates, Will Power and Scott McLaughlin were involved in an incident in the closing stages of practice.
