NTT IndyCar Series points leader Josef Newgarden in the No.2 Hitachi Chevrolet led the way in the opening practice ahead of Saturday’s Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway.
The Tennessee native set a fastest speed of 179.838MPH and ended the morning just ahead of his team mates Simon Pagenaud and Will Power.
Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in the No.27 NAPA Auto Parts Honda was fourth with a speed of 177.595MPH.
Defending NTT IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 PNC Bank Honda was fifth just ahead of Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda.
It was a great morning for AJ Foyt Racing’s Tony Kanaan in the No.14 ABC Supply Chevrolet as the Brazilian finished in seventh just ahead of the Mayor of HinchTown James Hinchcliffe in the No.5 Arrow Electronics Honda for Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports who is the defending race winner here in Iowa.
Felix Rosenqvist in the No.10 PNC Bank was 9th while Zach Veach in the No.26 Gainbridge Honda rounded out the top ten.
Marcus Ericsson was 11th for Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports just ahead of Santino Ferrucci and Sebastien Bourdais. Takuma Sato was 14th just ahead of the returning Ed Carpenter.
Spencer Pigot was just just ahead of Graham Rahal and Carlin Racing’s Sage Karam.
Colton Herta was 19th just ahead of Conor Daly while Marco Andretti and Matheus Matt Leist rounded out the order.
