Defending Verizon IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden led the way in the second practice session for Sunday’s Honda Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park in the No.1 Hitachi Chevrolet. The Tennessee native set a fastest time of 01:07.4345s.
Newgarden ended the session just ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot in the No.21 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet. It was a great session for Sebastien Bourdais despite going off track like most of his rivals as they tested the limits of the new aero kit, as the Frenchman ended the session in third place for Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser Sullivan Racing in the No.18 SealMaster Honda.
Will Power in the No.12 Verizon Chevrolet ended the session in fourth place with a fastest time of 01:07.8326s.
Championship leader Alexander Rossi was fifth fastest for Andretti Autosport ending the session just ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the No.9 PNC Honda who set a fastest time of 01:07.8445s.
Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda ended the session in seventh place just ahead of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato in the No.30 MiJack/Panasonic Honda.
Marco Andretti was ninth fastest while Graham Rahal in the No.15 MiJack Honda rounded out the top ten for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing with a time of 01:08.1076s. Max Chilton in the No.59 Gallagher Chevrolet was 11th for Carlin Racing.
Dale Coyne Racing’s Zachary Claman DeMelo was 12th fastest just ahead of Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Chevrolet for Team Penske who beached his car in the gravel and had to stop his session early. Zach Veach was 14th fastest in the No.26 Group One Thousand One Honda for Andretti Autosport.
Ed Jones in the No.10 NTT DATA Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing Honda was 15th fastest just ahead of Robert Wickens in the No.6 Lucas Oil Honda for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
Ed Carpenter Racing’s Jordan King was 17th fastest in the No.20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet ending the session just ahead of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe in the No.5 Arrow Electronics Honda. The Mayor of HinchTown set a fastest time of 01:08.7317s. Charlie Kimball in the No.23 Tresiba Chevrolet ended the session in 19th place for Carlin Racing just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Tony Kanaan and Matheus Matt Leist.
Juncos Racing’s Rene Binder ended the session in 22nd place while Gabby Chaves rounded out the order with a time of 01:09.4198s.
