Josef Newgarden in the No.21 Preferred Freezer/Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet set the fastest time in the final warm up ahead of the opening Verizon IndyCar Series race of the weekend in Detroit.
Newgarden set a fastest time of 01:14.6464s ending the morning just ahead of defending series champion Scott Dixon in the No.9 Target Chevrolet who set a fastest time of 01:14.8319s. Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda was third fastest with a fastest time of 01:14.9739s.
Pole sitter for race 1 Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Hewlett Packard Enterprises Chevrolet was fourth fastest setting a fastest time of 01:14.9979s while Juan Pablo Montoya in the No.2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet rounded out the top five with a fastest time of 01:15.2330s.
Marco Andretti was sixth fastest in the No.27 United Fibers & Data/Snapple Honda ending the session just ahead of Conor Daly who was very impressive in the No.18 Jonathan Byrd’s Hospitality Dale Coyne Racing Honda.
Sebastien Bourdais was eighth fastest in the No.11 Team Hydroxycut Chevrolet setting a fastest time of 01:15.4551s ending the session just ahead of Helio Castroneves in the No.3 Hitachi Chevrolet. Graham Rahal in the No.15 United Rentals Honda rounded out the top ten with a fastest time of 01:15.7407s.
Team Penske’s Will Power in the No.12 Verizon Chevrolet was 11th fastest with a time of 01:15.7503s ending the warm up just ahead of Andretti Autosport’s Carlos Munoz.
Jame Hinchcliffe who spun touching the wall at Turn 5 missed some of the session as his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports crew changed the rear wing of the No.5 Arrow car. Hinchcliffe ended the session 13th place and speaking during the session he said that the car was completely fine and that he had no concerns about the race.
Gabby Chaves was 14th fastest for Dale Coyne Racing with a time of 01:15.9126s in the No.19 Boy Scouts of America Honda.
Spencer Pigot in the No.20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka was 15th fastest with a time of 01:15.9402s ending the session just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Takuma Sato in the No.14 ABC Supply Co Honda. The Japanese driver set a time of 01:16.0275s. Alexander Rossi in the No.98 NAPA Auto Parts Andretti Autosport Honda was 17th fastest setting a time of 01:16.0940s.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball in the No.83 Tresiba® Chevrolet was 18th fastest setting a fastest time of 01:16.1888s ending the session just ahead of Jack Hawksworth in the No.41 ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt Racing Enterprises Honda who set a fastest time of 01:16.6627s. Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT DATA Chevrolet was 20th with time of 01:16.6988s.
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Mikhail Aleshin had another troubled session as the Russian, driving the No.7 SMP Racing Honda ended the morning in 21st place having spun the DOOM car twice, his fastest time was a 01:16.7108s. Max Chilton in the No.8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet rounded out the order in 22nd place with a fastest time of 01:17.0291s.
The next time the Verizon IndyCar Series will be on track today will be for Race 1 at 3:30pm.
