Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden dropped just two places in the Verizon IndyCar Series points standings after missing Saturday night’s Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Newgarden, who drives the No.21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet went into the weekend in third place in the standings and has now dropped to fifth place, however he is just ten points behind Tony Kanaan in third place with just two races remaining this season starting with Watkins Glen this weekend.
As far as the championship goes, mathematically Newgarden is still in with a chance of winning it despite being 115 points behind leader Simon Pagenaud however the season finale GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma is worth double points so effectively there is the equivalent of three races worth of points left this season.
Newgarden has had an incredible season regardless of what the outcome is at the end of the year, coming back from a broken clavicle and wrist in his crash at Texas in June to win the Iowa Corn 300 less than one month later was amazing.
Newgarden has three podium finishes this season including his victory at Iowa Speedway.
